Dr. Marco Montoya, a well educated Public Health Service professional with a military background, is running for the Congressional seat in Texas District 25 which encompasses parts of Austin and stretches all the way from just south of Fort Worth to almost San Marcos, which is just over 200 miles.
Dr. Montoya emigrated from Mexico and grew up in Los Angeles, California with his parents, a brother and three sisters. The son of a self-employed truck driver dealing in produce boxes, he understands the daily challenges of small businesses. Today he continues to encourage his recently retired 91 year old teacher-mother with the family's 33-year old party supply business. Montoya arrived in Texas in 1994 after a career starting as a US Army Private and ending as US Public Health Service Captain. Prior to serving with the US Public Health Service, Dr. Montoya worked at the Environmental Protection Agency in the Office of Pesticide Programs. At the request of the Chairman of the US House Appropriations Committee, he served a six-month tour with the Congress. He has had experiences in diverse projects involving, for example, the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Health Affairs, the NOAA Office of Health Programs, and the US Coast Guard Office of Occupational Health. Besides many military courses, he is a graduate of a National Defense University program and is a Distinguished Graduate of the US Naval War College.
Dr. Montoya has degrees in Sociology, Educational Psychology, and Public Health. He holds a doctorate from South Dakota State University in the field of Socio-Demography. He credits San Antonio College with putting him on a successful academic path.
Marco Montoya was the first Hispanic Assistant Commissioner at the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board serving as Assistant Commissioner for Health Affairs reporting to the Texas Higher Education Commissioner. After a recall to active duty, he continued at Texas State University when he contributed to the university becoming a Hispanic Serving Institution.
An Austin resident, Marco is proud of his son's achievements in the technology field and his daughter's research successes. An engaging grandfather of two, he is currently expecting his third grandson.
